Kicking-off

TransEuropa Ostend Spirit Spotted at Tilbury
It all seemed to be happening when I was away. Perhaps it's the novelty of warm sunshine over Thanet?

According to the Police, there was a 'disturbance' in Birchington's Station Road yesterday, involving several past and present local political figures as well as a fracas involving a 'Day-Glo' Nazi poster waved in front of a UKIP candidate.

Now you might think that this might involve some kind of roving diversity champion; perhaps even a larger-than life a Ramsgate councillor or even, by odd coincidence, an independent local filmmaker, who just happened to be passing, at the very moment it all' 'kicked-off'?  I could not possibly comment, as I wasn't present and I expect to see the results on YouTube very soon.

I have been chatting with the BBC, who know about it and are rather frustrated that the prevailing purdah period of election reporting, forbids them mentioning what happened in Birchington village at all, which leaves only me and I'm still quite vague about the details.

I am reliably informed, that a UKIP candidate, a parish councillor and an independent councillor were involved in a cynically-contrived, roadside political dust-up but I'm reluctant to mention the names of those involved, without corroboration of the detail, beyond the police and the BBC.

I'm sure however, that most readers will be able to make a pretty good guess at which political characters and agent provocateurs, may have been involved. Other sources tell me that no biting was reported during the incident and neither has the Councillor involved been given a ten match ban by the Standards Committee, at the time of writing this report.

Meanwhile, spotted today in the photograph moored at Tilbury docks. Looks familiar to the people of Ramsgate perhaps?

Having witnessed this 'event' I can tell you that it involved a rather portly gentleman - and I mean gentleman - and a scurrilous, big-eared (have a close look !)publicity hungry has-been. The younger one did himself no favours, and the gentleman with whom he had picked a cat fight remained calm and polite throughtout. I know who I will be voting for ! (And he hasn't got big ears.)

Councillors fighting in the street, I thought that was reserved for the council chamber?
Militant is alive and well and roaming in Thanet.

I witnessed the "incident" and must say the UKIP Candidate behaved impeccably under extreme provocation from a Parish Councillor complete with a Swastika Poster, a TDC Diversity and Equality Councillor (guess who?)and "Thanet Watch" Camera lady. A set piece ambush which failed. Why can't local politicians be allowed to canvass without provocation?

Have watched Driver pontificate on accreditation. Surely any journalist must apply for accreditation to the council before being allowed to record any meeting, by which
I mean they can't just turn up and film.

So this is twice in less than two weeks that he has walked out / been thrown out of Council meetings (one he is the chair of) right?

Maybe time to go ask the people of Northwood ward what exactly they expect their elected Councillor to be doing FOR THEM? Pretty sure they'll be thinking about normal stuff, litter, dog mess, anti-social behaviour... you know that sort of thing.

Instead of squabbling they should be united against having two Co-Ops in Birchington!

So if there was only one Co-op in Birchington that would be ok, even if it had the same working area as the two together? The beauty of two Co-ops is that if one shop hasn't got what you want then neither has the other one.

Or a Purple shop in Westgate

This Birchington demonstrates once again that it's always those who preach 'diversity and equality' loudest who are the most vindictive and intolerant bigots imaginable.

8:05, the answer to your question is "No": if this was just one large Co-Op store then people would be claiming that it's far too large for the town (indeed, it would be much larger than the proposed Tesco on Westgate). By having two stores they've been very sneaky.

Of course if it was one large Co-op then Sunday opening would be a problem with restricted hours. Maybe Tesco will show an interest in one of them, or Paydens, which is closing.

Why does the word un-diverse keep cropping up? The song by Jennifer Hudson and spotlight seems appropriate!

Simon, do you have an opinion on the two-Co-Ops-in-Birchington saga, or is this a bit too far west for you?

It seems a little daft but in regards to planning, who is actually trading in a building granted retail use is not really a matter for the Council, unless some breach of regulations are involved.

The Blair Witch Project is alive and well and operating in Birchington. Shame that a certain rainbow worrower only had a cameo role. And quite why the BBC should be interested in a contrived spat is beyond me? It's time these two, of advancing years, retired to their potting shed and potted some plants instead of taking pots at each other.

Is the Paydens in Westgate closing too?

Anonymous said...

Actually it's Ferris in Birchington that might close down, the lease is due to run out shortly. When I said Payden I meant Ferris, my mistake.

Ok - thank you.

6:11 from what I observed at the time Worrow was there to carry the Video bag for the Thanet Watch lady whilst she was filming, but obviously had to get himself in the picture. This is a Cllr who professes Equality and Diversity, provided of course, your opinion is the same as his, he has still had so many Standards cases against his behaviour, he would do well to stay out of the picture

My comment re the rainbow worrower was tongue in cheek 7:50 AM. Which statement I have just realised is a bad pun given the name of the alleged camera operator/accredited citizen journalist?. I do believe however that the more publicity this paragon of virtue gets the greater chance of people seeing him for what he really is and by his own actions reduce his vote to nil.
