Bye TIG - Hello Tom

Shock news that the cheerful  face of Thanet's independent political landscape has changed once again as Cllr Ian Driver has abandoned TIG in favour of Tom!

I'm still attempting to grasp the earth-shattering implications of Ian Driver swapping one set of independents for another with John Worrow now reduced to being the leader of a group of two, the real Birchington odd couple, alone and isolated in the company of Dr Cllr. Jack Cohen. What goes around comes around and with Westgate's Tom King back to strength with three again, (Driver, Grove, King) all bets are now off for Clive Hart's struggling minority Labour administration.

It's important to note that you can't have an official political group with less than three members, which means that TIG or what's left of it, loses its privileges in favour of Tom King's independents. A number of observers and council officers, will heave a sigh of relief that the bizarre Dr Strangelove character of John Worrow will no longer have the right to sit in with the leaders of the two main political groups and the Council's Chief Executive as an equal partner and there's a Monty Python irony in the whole affair.

So why, you might ask, would Ian Driver leave the warm political bosom of TIG? I'm sure there are a number of reasons, personal and political. Not least of all, his former colleagues, Worrow and Cohen voting with Labour, against any public debate of the Pleasurama, Royal Sands development agreement at the council meeting in December.

One thing is certain however, this story will run and run in the weeks to come as the political battle lines are re-drawn.

Staying briefly with TIGs or in this case the distinguished Cllr Dr Jack Cohen's complaint against this weblog, a public hearing has been called at further taxpayer's expense for the middle of this month.

You may recall that the standards complaint revolves around the satirical use of the nickname 'Sober Jack' among other matters and regardless of my unreserved public apology last month, the matter is now being taken to the local government equivalent of a small trial hearing, where the evidence will be reviewed. Once again, the shadow of Monty Python's iconic Spanish Inquisition, stalks the corridors of Thanet District Council but the event with the public gallery open, may be better attended than the busiest council meeting of last year.

Maybe Cllr Driver has realised, at last, that he has been used as a porn in Cllr. Cohen's push for power and authority. It is only a matter of time before Cllr Worrow realises the same but given his antics of recent months, where can he go ? This is clearly a matter of chickens coming home to roost and it should be noted that Cllr Driver has made a brave decision. I now regard Cllr Driver in a different light, perhaps his politics are serious after all. Of the three TIGS, I have always regarded him as the most 'level headed' and it would seem I was right. He has done well to distance himself from the egotistical Cllr. Dr. Jack Cohen and the attention seeking Cllr. Worrow. Things will start to get interesting now. How did Cllr Cohen allow this to happen ? Looks like he's losing his grip !!!!! Hurrah !!!!

Is that "Porn," "Prawn" of maybe "Pawn" each with interesting connotations!

Sorry, it was the excitement of hearing that Cllr. Dr. Cohne's little fifedom is crumbling ! It is supposed to be pawn, obviously !

Oh dear. I really did hope that elected members would get their act together this year in the interests of the voters.
It seems not, their own ego and interests continue to take priority. Another year older maybe, but surely not another year wiser.

I think a little caution is needed. Ian Driver has left TIG - that does not mean that he has automatically sided with the Tories. In fact, unless you are espousing a cause that he supports, I doubt whether he will take your side.

So that is democracy

wasting money does not surprise me in the least! I've had issues and complaints about a serious H&S matter being 'considered' by various people at TDC inc. their prosecuting lawyer and the Chief Exec for a year now and the matter is nowhere near resolved. Delays due to non-response by TDC are dragging the matter on and on...all those big important people spending all this time dealing with a little person like me on one matter. Can't be sensible can it?! Common sense, manners and plain old respect and consideration for others seems to be rather lacking within the walls of TDC! x

Bernie,

You appear to have overlooked the fact that you are in a very long queue. Only one year is pretty good going. From the comments on the local blogs there are possibly some 130,000 waiting with you.

Well done Ian Driver at least he has demonstrated that he is playing a straight bat in theawful political scene in TDC and to distance himself from Cohen Worrow is a smart move what is interesting now is how long wil Cohen stick with Worrow and what will Worrow do then? Time now Clive to take Worrow's Chairmanship away and give it to one of the more serious Councillors who know what they are doing. Three cheers for Driver
