Westbrook Nature Reserve Opens

I'm just back from the Westbrook undercliff where the sign, showing the presence of the new nature reserve, was officially dedicated by ward councillor Mick Tomlinson in the company of  the Mayor of Margate Iris Johnston, with the Chair of Thanet Council, Doug Clark, supported by local campaigner, Tony Sykes and other local volunteers and councillors.

In the nick of time as well as it started to pour with rain and I'm soaked from walking home again!

The success of this community project, as I'm sure residents and campaigners will agree, illustrates that simply engaging in conversation with a request and a plan can be far more productive than turning a project or an asset into a political football.

Well done everyone involved for such commitment and hard work in achieving this excellent result.

From Councillor John Kirby - I was very pleased to see the report about the opening of the Westbrook Nature reserve. I would have appreciated an invitation as I gave £1000 from my KCC Grant in order to kickstart this event and others through the Thanet Conservation Group. I am the KCC rep for Thanet with the Kent Wildlife Trust and look forward to other projects in the area.

Quite right John, I'm surprised you were omitted given your generous contribution.

Oh dear local Conservatives, remembered Iris (Red) but forgot John (Blue). Maybe after the TDC elections the Kirbys are PNG
I'm presuming that equal enthusiasm will be shown for Pegwell Bay,(SSSI and hugely important national site) under threat from pollution from Manston Airport and road run-off (ask Alasdair Bruce)

Not paying attention 5.33 are you?

If you gave a £1000 to any project regardless of being blue, red or slightly pink, you might rightly expect an invitation to the opening!

This hasn't anything to do with politics as much as you migt wish otherwise

Just what is John doing as a Ramsgate County Councilor giving £1k to this project. Isnt it meant to support Ramsgate projects?

I believe John has a broader KCC remit for green projects or did last year!

Re councillor John Kirby. I am not aware of any donation of £1000 towards this project from him. Is there some confusion here. Mick Tomlinson very kindly aranged and paid for us to have a sign the rest was down to the sweat and toil of volunteers supported by the Kent Wildlife Trust and Thanet Coast Project. If this thousand pounds was meant for this project where did it go? If John would like to be involved then he would be most welcome please email waspsis@hotmail.co.uk. and I can put him on our mailing list. I appologise if I am missing something here.

Thanks Tony.. I'm sure John will be in touch to clear up any confusion. Great result and well done of achieving such a successful conclusion after so much effort!

To clear up any confusion I gave a grant from my Kent County Council members Grant for £1000 for Kent Wildlife to set up the Thanet Conservation group which after meetings decided on a range of programmes of biodiversity and local green schemes around Thanet of which this was the first in February this year followed by the clearing of the Secret Garden in Addington Street Margate in March this year. Paul Pearce and paul Dickenson I think are aware of my involvement. My role in KCC is wider than just Ramsgate with my wider interest in the Kent Wildlife Trust. I hope this sorts out any confusion -John Kirby
