Finding Osama Bin Laden's Compound

I'm not sure that the news media have realised yet that Google Earth gives remarkably good resolution of the area surrounding the entrance to the Pakistan Military Academy, (PMA) where Osama Bin had his residence off the Kakul Road, Abbottābad in Pakistan.

Aerial photography being one of the jobs I do for the media from time to time, I'm really quite surprised that BBC and Sky News didn't look for this immediately and the commercial version of Google Earth can offer much higher satellite resolutions if one is prepared to spend a few shekels to examine an image in greater detail.

What I find particularly interesting in the light of media reports of Bin Laden's medical condition is that he is within walking distance of two of the best hospitals in Pakistan. None of the media sources I have seen have picked that up yet as an item of further interest.

Less than 10 minutes after I sent the image to Dermot on Sky News, Tim Marshall pulled up an image and identified it, so a good result or simply a coincidence! - NB thanks to a reader giving me the exact Latitude and Longitude I have now updated the photo to dead centre and to the SE of the military Academy as shown in the White House briefing.

Praise be to Allah, a bit of Evil has left this world.
The only 'good terrorist' is a dead one.
Now, if we can only get the rest!!!

Whilst agreeing with the previous comment I prefer, thanks be to God!
Nice bit of map research, Simon, but fascinating that such a prominent and recognisable 'wanted man' should seek to hide so close to a theoretically enemy military installation. Makes one wonder though what I am not sure.

Anyway, cause to celebrate one less evil in the world though I do not doubt there will be others happy to leap into his shoes.

Just got a reply from Tim Marshall @ Sky News thanking me for raising the hospitals point which had not occurred to him yet

The special forces will most likely have been wearing headcams but i doubt we will ever see the footage

CNN previewed Google Earth imaging this morning around 9am, local Afghan time, running zooms in on the area. I am out in Afghanistan, the only Brit on my camp working with Americans. The canteen was quiet this morning at breakfast as we listened in.

CNN were obviously 'On the ball' before Sky then... Thanks

Take care of yourself out there!

It seems very strange that no sooner have they caught and killed the worlds "MOst Wanted" terrorist, that they then dispose of him in the sea.

If past experience is anything to go by, they would have at the very least paraded the corpse a little to show that they had achieved goal number 1.
In a crime scene you always have to have a body, here we only have the word of the CIA and US miliatary to rely on, but no tangible proof that the body disposed of was in fact the body of Bin L:aden.
As with the backlash on 9/11 it cannot be taken for granted that the U S authorities will tell the whole truth.
On the day of the 9/11 attacks in New York, Bin Laden was actually being treated in an american military hospital in the middle east, I just hope this is not more of the smoke and mirrors policy that Geoge W was obsessed with during his time, one thing is absolutely certain though, things are going to be even more scary over the coming months as the terrorist factions decide on their inevitable response.

Allah is God, it's just their word. No wonder Islamist terrorism finds a hold in this country when we can't even be tolerant of other peoples language.

I don't think the person using the term Allah was actually a Muslim, do you 6:16. It was just someone doing an association between victim and religion.

As for the burial at sea it makes sense. No point in further inflaming sensibilities by not buring promptly, as is their custom, but at sea means there is no grave to be a site for rallying to the cause.

For the doubter, it would sem that organisations like Hamas are convinced but what would they know compared with our good old UK based anti-all things American fraternity.

This man organised the killing of thousends of innocent people... we are better off with him dead

OBL was a Wahhabi who traditionally are buried in unmarked graves. In Islam there are two reasons allowing someone to be buried at sea - if they died during a long sea voyage and their body would be pretty horrid by the time their ship made land or if there was a liklihood that their enemies would dig up their body. The second reason probably applies in this case.
I think what 6:16 was trying to say was that why would Bluenote prefer Thank God to Thank Allah? Would he prefer Thank God to Grace Dieu or is his gripe with Allah?

You have the wrong site labeled as the Bib Laden Compound. It is South and East of the Military Academy at 34-10-10 N 73-14-34 E

Thanks. I will have a look. Of course I was only going on what was being broadcast at 09:00 this morning!

Many thanks for the tip. I've corrected the picture out to the South east now and it solves the problem I had trying to reconcile the White House Briefing image with the original photo. The compound had what looked like a grass landing strip beside it and that I couldn't see anywhere to the north in the first position given by the media!

No problem with Allah, 7:46, but in England I think we should stick to our own language. After all we don't, when at home, refer to Spain as Espana or France as Francais.

Please try to be more relaxed and stop looking for 'isms' or 'phobias' in every innocent remark. It gives away your 'progressive' bias.
